Time for Change

After nearly nine years, Neil has decided it’s time to call it a day at the Balgedie Toll Tavern. Running a six‑day‑a‑week operation is undoubtedly hard work — though enjoyable — but having turned 60 this year, the moment is right to pass on the custodianship of the Toll and make a little more time for family and life beyond the bar.

The current plan is to finish at the end of December, with our final food service taking place on 24th December. Until then it is business as usual.

The building landlord will be advertising the lease in the usual trade publications, but if anyone out there is interested, please do get in touch. There is certainly an opportunity for someone to take it on as a going concern, we’ll be leaving behind a loyal community who have supported us over the years, it would mean a lot to think someone out there could build on what we’ve created.

We have now stopped selling Gift vouchers and would encourage anyone who still has valid vouchers to try and use them before 24th December.

Dog Friendly

Just a gentle reminder that we have a small area that is dog friendly but it is popular and you must book ahead to avoid being turned away.

Our Story

The Balgedie Toll Tavern is a country restaurant in rural Kinross-shire, serving great food and real ales. Run by Neil Cairney and family since September 2019 you can be assured of a warm welcome.

The Balgedie Toll Tavern is a welcoming and comfortable country tavern which, like many others built at the time in Scotland, was situated at a road toll where travellers would break their journey and pay tolls before travelling on (the Tolls were abolished in 1872). Now much extended, the oldest part of the building (the Toll house) is at the southern end.

It has two restaurant seating areas, downstairs in the main bar and the small snug bar. The interior is traditional with low ceilings, oak beams, stone walls and open fire places. On a sunny day the outside seating area provides a place to relax.

A good selection of real ales, malt whiskies, wines, and gins are available. Locally roasted coffee and great food are served 6 days, we are closed all day on a Wednesday.

From traditional recipes to Head Chef Edward's kitchen adventures, the menu reflects our passion for high-quality local seasonal food presented in a simple yet pleasing manner.
